I've seen the OSB suffer thru rainstorms with no ill effects....if you did that with particle board it would swell and be useless.

GC is right, from 20 feet you can't tell vinyl from the real thing. Especially shingles. I was leaning against a $2 million house on Marion way 15 years ago and didn't realize it was vinyl shingles....

And there are really great plastic "slate" roofing shingles that look better than the real thing....there are also insulated Italian terra cotta red plastic tiles that make your house look like Tuscan...

I opted for the top of the line Certainteed (un-insulated) vinyl clapboards. The double seams bugs me a little but not having to paint every 3-7 years is well worth it. Actually I don't even see it...
